Swed bank invites high school students to create business ideas to promote sustainability

In the annual business planning competition "Business Sketches" with a cash prize fund of more than 6,000 euros, business plans of high school teams will be available from December 5 to January 11 on the competition website. Highlighting the role of each in the protection of the planet and the urgency and urgency of this issue, Swed bank, in cooperation with Junior Achievement Latvia and Project Bank, especially invited young people to think about modern products and services that combat climate change.

“What business ideas to develop to promote sustainability?

Over the last 50 years, the world has experienced unprecedented economic growth and, at the same time, overexploited natural resources to ensure this growth. This creates a vicious circle: the world's economic model fails to take care of the nature on which people depend. The problems are already there and will only increase if people's habits, business and national policies do not change. For example, the number of people in the world is growing and at the same time the amount of food needed to feed the population, but the area of land needed to grow it will not be enough in the coming decades. Also, the growing trend for people to choose to live in cities creates a huge load on infrastructure - water supply, sewerage, roads, houses, transport - which in turn reduces the quality of life in cities and contributes to global climate change.

Taking into account society's values   and needs, and at the same time the world's natural resources, is a filter of how every entrepreneur should look at their business. Positive change can also be facilitated by seemingly small but effective solutions without large investments and complex technologies. Whether they are publicly available community refrigerators to return leftover food, or talking bins to promote waste sorting and street cleanliness, or other behavioral drivers in the urban environment, this is all the way to sustainability.

We encourage young people to look at and capture the current sustainability challenges side by side, such as food and commodity consumption, transport use and water pollution, and to use it to inspire ideas and raise awareness of green habits in society. "

buy cheaper, sell more expensive - trade

  • Trading has always been a popular business, many have been able to develop it to enormous proportions.
  • The principle is quite simple - take the time to find goods at lower prices, which you are sure to sell at a higher price.
  • This type of business will work especially well if you know how to supply goods that are not so accessible to people. For example, some rare collectibles, goods that are difficult to buy in Latvia or even used, still good goods.
  • A great example of inspiration is the young Australian entrepreneur Greta var Rila - she runs several businesses based on the resale model. Her e-shop "Dropbottle" sells environmentally friendly fruit infusion bottles. She buys them from third-party manufacturers and resells them in her online store.
  • The good news is that you can start with a very small supply of goods or train your hand by selling your own belongings that you no longer want to use.

  • There's nothing to lose already, is there? Especially nowadays, when there are tools that allow you to create your own e-shop, sitting at home on the couch, living with the knowledge you already have.

Organizes, manages, plans events If you like and manage to plan,,

  • You can:
  • Organize events;
  • Being an event manager;
  • Just plan events;
  • Do all 3 !!
  • These skills are in high demand. From children's parties, hen and stag parties, corporate and cohesive events to weddings and other events.
  • Create a gallery where people can view pictures of your work. If you don't already have one, go here and make sure you can get it. Also, always remember to get feedback from customers and publish them as they have tremendous power in this area.

  • However, if you think you lack knowledge, then you can start with small steps. Start by creating scenery, or assisting and managing events to gain experience and knowledge of all behind the scenes.

  Organizes excursions, hikes

  • If you are communicative, want to have a good time and, in addition, know your city, its surroundings or a specific place, then you may be able to share this knowledge by organizing interesting excursions or hikes.

  • For example, a hike that looks at the brightest examples of street art, early morning bike rides or other types of excursions that come to mind.

  • To make it easier to develop, you can create a website where you place an offer, complete groups, answer questions and even post stories from previous hikes.

  • A good example is Elizabeth Storm from Cesis. She has created the tourism project #Cesisinside. The target audience of the project is tourists and adventure seekers who want to get to know Cēsis through the eyes of a local resident.

  • Elizabete created a website www.cesisinside.lv, where she used beautiful photos and convincing texts, inviting visitors to join her events.

You can become a mediator

You may associate being a mediator with something negative, but it is worth looking at the case from the other side. In reality, you are simply helping to connect the customer to a solution or product.

For example, giants such as Booking and Airbnb are simply intermediaries that make it easier to find accommodation by combining demand with supply.

However, you do not have to be a huge company or a platform worth millions to operate in the field of mediation services.

Here are some examples of brokerage services:

You can work as a broker (for example, in insurance or real estate) or as an agent (for example, to represent a client in a specific place or company)
You can offer to help people organize their trip, its routes, transport from A to Z. For many, this process is very time consuming and stressful.
Find a product, process or niche that is your passion or can make things easier for people and businesses and take action.
